2018 came to change everything. Without a doubt, the most intense, most aggressive, most difficult edition we face until that October day. Without a doubt, our biggest victory to date, for athletes, volunteers and organization.
The one that was planned to be our best organized event, ended up being, due to the very adverse weather conditions, the biggest challenge known in our history. After the reception of the participants in the Europe camp, located in the Club de Aeromodelismo Campo de Gibraltar, under heavy rain and SO wind (perfect conditions for a storm), we took the decision to offer everyone an overnight stay in a sports center provided by the City of Algeciras.
The following day, the stage in Gibraltar developed in good conditions until the arrival of the expected storm, early in the afternoon, which forced the participants and volunteers to live together and “enjoy” a rain that gave an epic tone to the climbing of Mediterránean Steps, in the Natural Park of Upper Rock del Peñon. We closed the stage with a spectacular prize-giving ceremony in St Michael´s Cave.
At the end of the stage, on the way back to Camp Europa, and knowing that it was completely flooded and with real risk for all of us who had to spend the night there, the complicated final decision was taken to move the operation of Camp de Algeciras to the Polideportivo Andrés Mateo in the city of the beautiful bay.
The storm passed happily, and allowed us to enjoy the rest of the event and races in better conditions. The #MagicCádiz27 and 50 were celebrated with a spectacular day, in which the participants could enjoy the fog forests of the Alcornocales Natural Park, in the mountains of Algeciras and Los Barrios, with a proposal of modified layout for security reasons, eliminating the high area of the route (10kms aprox).
After celebrating the awards ceremony, concert and closing of the European stages, we headed the next day towards Tangier, the port that welcomed us on the southern shore of the Eurafrica Territory, as always with the company of FRS, our official shipping company since the beginning of our event. In Tangier we enjoyed a guided tour of the Medina, and headed towards the fishing village that would welcome us in Morocco: Belyounech. There, between the white mass of the Jbel Musa and the Mediterranean Sea, we would spend two nights in the tents and classrooms of the school that our Moroccan friends so generously gave us.
The #FRSBelyounech25 discovered the power and peculiarity of the Jbel Musa, one of the mythical columns of Hercules (together with his European sister, Gibraltar), that against what might seem, with its less than 900 meters high, revealed itself as a technical and very demanding “Montañón”, in a pure skyrace stage, with landscapes, climbs and descents that took your breath away. After the short but hard final stage of Eurafrica18 we enjoyed the kindness and company of the people of Belyounech, first with a group of young local musicians in the school where we set up the camp, then in the place where we celebrated the final prize-giving with a big party.
This is how Eurafrica18 was developed, a definitive year for all of us, which gave us the feeling of forming a great family that travels and remains united, above all. A year that will mark the way for the next ones… Eurafrica would never be the same.
