2018. The most intense edition.

2018 came to change everything. Without a doubt, the most intense, most aggressive, most difficult edition we face until that October day. Without a doubt, our biggest victory to date, for athletes, volunteers and organization.

The one that was planned to be our best organized event, ended up being, due to the very adverse weather conditions, the biggest challenge known in our history. After the reception of the participants in the Europe camp, located in the Club de Aeromodelismo Campo de Gibraltar, under heavy rain and SO wind (perfect conditions for a storm), we took the decision to offer everyone an overnight stay in a sports center provided by the City of Algeciras.

The following day, the stage in Gibraltar developed in good conditions until the arrival of the expected storm, early in the afternoon, which forced the participants and volunteers to live together and “enjoy” a rain that gave an epic tone to the climbing of Mediterránean Steps, in the Natural Park of Upper Rock del Peñon. We closed the stage with a spectacular prize-giving ceremony in St Michael´s Cave.

At the end of the stage, on the way back to Camp Europa, and knowing that it was completely flooded and with real risk for all of us who had to spend the night there, the complicated final decision was taken to move the operation of Camp de Algeciras to the Polideportivo Andrés Mateo in the city of the beautiful bay.

The storm passed happily, and allowed us to enjoy the rest of the event and races in better conditions. The #MagicCádiz27 and 50 were celebrated with a spectacular day, in which the participants could enjoy the fog forests of the Alcornocales Natural Park, in the mountains of Algeciras and Los Barrios, with a proposal of modified layout for security reasons, eliminating the high area of the route (10kms aprox).

After celebrating the awards ceremony, concert and closing of the European stages, we headed the next day towards Tangier, the port that welcomed us on the southern shore of the Eurafrica Territory, as always with the company of FRS, our official shipping company since the beginning of our event. In Tangier we enjoyed a guided tour of the Medina, and headed towards the fishing village that would welcome us in Morocco: Belyounech. There, between the white mass of the Jbel Musa and the Mediterranean Sea, we would spend two nights in the tents and classrooms of the school that our Moroccan friends so generously gave us.

The #FRSBelyounech25 discovered the power and peculiarity of the Jbel Musa, one of the mythical columns of Hercules (together with his European sister, Gibraltar), that against what might seem, with its less than 900 meters high, revealed itself as a technical and very demanding “Montañón”, in a pure skyrace stage, with landscapes, climbs and descents that took your breath away. After the short but hard final stage of Eurafrica18 we enjoyed the kindness and company of the people of Belyounech, first with a group of young local musicians in the school where we set up the camp, then in the place where we celebrated the final prize-giving with a big party.

This is how Eurafrica18 was developed, a definitive year for all of us, which gave us the feeling of forming a great family that travels and remains united, above all. A year that will mark the way for the next ones… Eurafrica would never be the same.

2017. The edition of the Union.

In what was our second Intercontinental edition, we met the challenge and the dream of uniting the three shores of the Strait of Gibraltar around sports, nature and the cultures that populate it. 2017 will go down in history because it is the first year in which Gibraltar was part of Eurafrica.

It was exciting to kick off at the lighthouse of Europa Point Gibraltar, with the presence of great runners, accompanied by hundreds of dreamer eurafricanos with becoming Intercontinental.

The test had as “homes” the Natural Parks of Upper Rock Natural Reserve (GIB), Natural Park Los Alcornocales (ESP) and Parc Naturel Talassemtane (MAR), being the headquarters of our camps the cities of Algeciras and Los Barrios (Cádiz, ESP) and Chefchaouen (MAR).

The humidity was the great protagonist in the first two European stages, with mild temperatures but a humidity in the environment that made the performance of the runners difficult, with more incidence in the Spanish stage of the Alcornocales.

More than 600 participants in total (200 of them Intercontinental), 125 volunteers lived and met the great challenge: uniting the Strait with our steps

2016. We made history

On 1st November we made history, becoming the first cross-country mountain race in the world on two continents.

Months of work, effort and willpower materialised, dispelling concerns in the kasbah of the Chefchaouen medina, where the Eurafrica Trail 2016 participants received their trophies to be remembered as intercontinental runners.

Eurafrica 2016 was headquartered in Algeciras in Europe, and in the Rif city of Chefchaouen, hosting the 4-day event within Eurafrica Territory, the Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean—all in the camps, which is where everything took place.

There were 5 types of race to participate in: Intercontinental 80, Intercontinental 55, and the local races Quercus 50, Quercus 25 and the Moroccan FRS Tissouka 30, in which 600 people set off to run on spectacular, tough routes requiring skill in the European Los Alcornocales Nature Park and Moroccan Talassemtane National Park.

2015. "Zero" edition

In 2014 we dreamed of creating what was to be the first race in the world on two continents. We took the first step in 2015 with the “zero” edition of the Eurafrica Trail, in which 500 people took part.

Although the inaugural edition of the event took place only on European soil, it was a high-level sporting challenge with routes between Algeciras and Tarifa in the natural parks of Los Alcornocales and The Strait.

The races that inaugurated the Eurafrica Trail history were the 70 km Long Trail, which started in the Plaza Alta square in Algeciras and finished in Tarifa; and the Colada de la Costa, which began in Pelayo in Algeciras and also ended in Tarifa, covering 21 km mostly in the Strait Natural Park.
