EurafricaTrail

Sustainability

Eurafrica Trail has been, is, and will continue to be a sporting event deeply committed to sustainability, environmental education, and the protection of the natural surroundings in which it takes place.

The purpose of Eurafrica Trail is to create connections between nature and culture in the Strait of Gibraltar through sport.
With this goal in mind, the race organizers—working in collaboration with FADMES, local municipalities, the administrations of the protected natural areas involved, and the athletes and environmental volunteers—have developed a wide range of initiatives aimed at promoting and preserving the natural parks that host our race stages. These actions are designed to raise and nurture environmental awareness among all participants.

Examples of this philosophy include the Eurafrica Forest project, which sought to offset the ecological footprint of the event by planting native species in areas designated by environmental authorities, and the cleaning of trails and rivers—efforts we’ve carried out
more than once in the province of Cádiz and in M’Diq, Morocco.
We have also received numerous ideas and best practices from these groups over the nine years of the event’s existence. One such example is the implementation of the Good Practice Guide for Sporting Events in Natural Areas, developed by FEDME and Europarc, which we have been applying for several editions now during our stage in Cádiz.

Eurafrica Trail now takes a historic and decisive step in its commitment to sustainability by choosing to pursue the Green Label certification—a project led by the Spanish Federation and Europarc. This vertification aims to ensure that organizers of sporting events in protected natural environments meet a series of quality standards that help establish and promote sustainability as a strategic element, embedded at every level
and in every aspect of events like ours.
